Job Description – Indian Head, MD

Venesco is looking for an EDE Chemist at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technology Division


  • EDE chemistry laboratory supports preparation of samples for T&E as well as quantitative analysis
  • The following instruments are currently in operation to support these tasks
  • Chromatography
  • High Pressure Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC)
  • Ion Chromatograph (IC)
  • Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer (GC/MS)
  • Spectroscopy
  • Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectrometer
  • Raman Spectrometer
  • Thermal Analysis
  • Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC)
  • Thermo Gravimetric Analysis (TGA)
  • Duties
  • Primary: Document procedures for analytical instrumentation and general operations in a chemistry lab
  • For each of the instruments in the EDE lab, the candidate will prepare and maintain:
  • Operational procedures
  • Maintenance logs
  • Utilization logs
  • The candidate will develop and maintain chain of custody documentation for incoming and outgoing lab samples
  • Become proficient in the use of all instruments listed above
  • It is not expected that the candidate be an expert in the operation of all the listed instruments, but he or she should have enough experience with some of them such that over time he/she can obtain the proficiency necessary to prepare the needed documentation for all of the instruments
  • Perform validation of operational procedures for each of the instruments
  • Assist with quality control checks/sample analysis using the listed instruments
  • Required Skills
  • Technical and/or professional writing
  • Knowledge of standard scientific procedures and methods
  • Familiarity with/general understanding of the techniques used by each of the instruments above
  • Experience operating 1 chromatography-based system from the list above and 1 spectroscopy-based system from the list above
  • Desired Skills (Nice to Have)
  • Familiarity with ISO 17025 requirements
  • Ability to evaluate analytical, physical, and structural information to derive the components of an unknown sample
  • Experience analyzing or handling explosives
